Day 31

Today the chickens learned to dig for worms.  Murphy seemed to be very good at it.

Day 30

We went on an overnight trip and Murphy must have missed Josh.  As soon as he opened their brooder, she flew onto his hand and stayed there a while.

Day 29

The chicks have been with us for four weeks now.  We took them outside to run around for the first time today.  They seemed to enjoy it.  They all ate some bugs and worms.

Day 28

Today Miss Prissy found her way onto the counter and spent a lot of time staring at herself in the mirror.  She must have been admiring that interesting hairdo of hers.

We weighed the chicks again today.  Here is Larry being weighed.

One of the Black Australorps is the biggest at 10 ounces.  That’s almost twice what she was nine days ago (5.25).  She’ll be a full pound by next week.  The other Black Australorp is the smallest, weighing in at 7.5 ounces.

Day 27

The chicks are four weeks old now.

Josh named this one Larry.  Larry enjoys sitting on our laps and getting petted.  She will fall asleep like that until one of the other chicks steps on her.

Here is Larry looking at herself in the mirror.  She’s not sure where that chicken came from or what its intentions are, but she’s going to keep an eye on it.

I’m not sure why Josh named his hen “Larry.”  He wanted to name Avery “Larry,” but that wasn’t going to happen.  He’s happy now that he finally named something “Larry.”

Day 26

Easter Peeps

The chicks really enjoy being up high.  They like to sit on our shoulders and on top of our heads.

Josh has named this one “Murphy”

This is “Miss Prissy” (like the hen on Bugs Bunny)

Day 25

As you can see, their chest feathers are filling in.  They are all mostly covered with feathers now.  The Polish are the only ones with feathers on their heads so far.

They are all very curious and like to try new things.

They all wanted a turn walking between my ankles.

Day 24

Dogs and chickens

Avery loves to stare at the chicks.  We took one out today to let her see up close and she tried to chomp it.  I guess we’ll try again next week.  Ozzy just stared at it and shook.  Dandy is totally uninterested in them.

Day 23

Hmm…what’s this?

Let me stand on it.

Get off, it’s my turn.

Get away!  It’s mine!

(Notice the one on top has a piece in her mouth and another is trying to take it ).

Day 22

We’ve had the chicks for three weeks now.  I still can’t believe that they were just tiny little fuzzy balls three weeks ago.  They’ve gotten so big and changed so much.
This Black Australorp is the biggest chick

The crest (head feathers) on the Polish are really coming in, giving them weird little mullets
